  • ADVISORY, CONCILIATION AND ADVISORY SERVICE (ACAS)
    ACAS is largely funded by the government, but acts as an independent organisation. Its primary role is to give advice to employers and employees, to provide information and training, and to work with organisations and employees to resolve problems.

    The ACAS website contains a range of publications covering all areas of employment. It is possible to download advisory booklets, including codes of practice.

    For authoritative advice approved by parliament and referred to by Employment Tribunals, the Code of Practice on Disciplinary and grievance procedures


  • CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF PERSONNEL AND DEVELOPMENT (CIPD)
    The CIPD is the professional body for those involved in leading and managing people. The CIPD is involved in advising on all people related issues and carries out a large number of surveys and research projects, which provide an insight on current trends and future developments in employment.

    A large range of items on the CIPD website are accessible to non-members. This includes access to articles from the CIPD fortnightly magazine – People Management.

    For surveys and reports providing analysis on current and topical issues. In particular, Labour Market Outlook, the quarterly report which monitors the employment intentions, the pressures facing HR professionals, and a `Focus` on a topical issue


  • CONFEDERATION OF BRITISH INDUSTRY (CBI)
    The CBI is the voice of businesses in the UK. They are the main lobbying organisation for UK business, both nationally and internationally.

    The CBI website is useful for finding out about progress on the development of legislation and policies. It is also a useful source of research on a wide range of business issues. The website is accessible to non-members.

  • DEPARTMENT FOR BUSINESS INNOVATION & SKILLS (BIS)
    BIS is the department within government which addresses business related issues. It has taken over the function of the former Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
     
    On the BIS website, there is an employment matters section. Here you can find out about recent and proposed changes to legislation, including consultation documents. There are also useful summaries of legislation relating to all areas of employment.

  • EMPLOYMENT TRIBUNALS SERVICE (ETS)
    The ETS website provides information for both employees and employers who are facing employment tribunals. It is possible to submit a claim, and respond to a claim made, to the employment tribunal through the website.
     
    As well as explaining the process of making a claim, the website also contains very useful information about the procedures within the employment tribunals, and how to prepare for a hearing.

  • EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION (EHRC)
    The EHRC replaced the work of the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Disability Rights Commission and the Commission for Racial Equality.
     
    The EHRC is responsible for all areas of discrimination (including those areas not previously covered by the three commissions identified above) as well as human rights. The website includes a range of useful materials, including details of discrimination and human rights legislation, sample policies and procedures, advisory documents and recent research.

  • HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE (HSE)
    The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of people at work. It does this through providing information and carrying out research, as well as through carrying out on site inspections.
     
    The website contains a useful range of policies, publications and explanations of the obligations upon employers. The website also has a link to allow employers to report any reportable incidents.
     
    Practical information on the 10 key actions that businesses need to do to comply with the law.


  • TRADES UNION CONGRESS (TUC)
    The TUC is the voice of trade unions in the UK. They are the main lobbying organisation representing employees in the UK and, through the ETUC, internationally.
     
    The TUC website is very comprehensive and contains information, guidance and policies on a full range of employment issues and details of current campaigns. It also has links to a wide range of other websites to provide more detailed information on specific topics. The website is accessible to non-members.
     
    The majority of trade union organisations are affiliated with the TUC. Its site provides the details of its 58 member organisations, including the address of any dedicated website, which employers with a resident union may find useful to visit.
     
    Information on the latest developments in employment from the union’s perspective.


  • UK BORDER AGENCY (BIA)
    The BIA is the part of the Home Office which is responsible for border control. Hence, it is the body responsible for immigration.
     
    On the website you can find information about working, studying and visiting the UK. It has specific information for employers who want to employ people from overseas. It provides links to essential policies and documents that employers are required to complete.
     
    Information about employers` responsibilities in relation to the law on preventing illegal working.


  • THE INFORMATION COMMISSIONER`S OFFICE (ICO)
    The Information Commissioner`s Office (ICO) is an independent authority set up to promote access to official information and to protect personal information.  It is responsible for enforcing and overseeing the Data Protection Act 1998 , the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications 2003.
     
    The ICO website provides information about the above legislation. It includes good practice notes for employers as well as information on the use of CCTV, employment issues, marketing and starting a new business.


  • BUSINESS LINK
    Business Link is the official government website providing free practical advice, support and information to businesses of all sizes.  It has a useful Employment & Skills section giving advice about employer obligations, benefit payments, pension requirements, recruitment, training and much more.  There is also an Employer Direct online service where employers can create, view and update their vacancies on the Jobcentre Plus website.
