This week buddy was asked: Is it true that from April the smoking ban will be in force in Wales?

Buddy says:Yes, as of 2 April, The Health Act 2006 prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces in Wales. This being 3 months before the 1 July ban takes effect in England. Essentially the smoking ban in Wales will mean no lighting up at work, in pubs or clubs, although there will be some exemptions, such as hotel rooms. The ban places a duty on employers and managers of no-smoking premises to take reasonable steps to ensure staff, customers and visitors are aware of the new law and that they do not smoke on their premises.

Further Information: A very useful website based purely on the smoking ban in Wales can be found at http://www.smokingbanwales.co.uk/english/. This provides a breakdown of the implications that the smoking ban will have on employers and employees together with useful guidance and links to the relevant legislation.

Employers in England should also be preparing for when the ban comes into force in England on 1 July 2007.
