Measuring performance

Acceptable standards of performance must be established in order to identify and remedy under performance. Standards of performance can be communicated through induction training, detailed job descriptions and the setting of specific targets.

Individual performance can be measured against the benchmark. How you monitor performance will depend on the nature of the role and could include regular appraisals, statistical information or customer complaints.

Can an employee be dismissed for poor performance?

An employee who consistently underperforms can be dismissed on the ground of "capability". Capability is a fair reason for dismissal. However to dismiss fairly it is also necessary for the employer to follow a fair and reasonable process to reach the decision to dismiss based on the guidance contained in the ACAS Code of Practice on Discipline and Grievance.
