References checklist

  1. Ideally, you should obtain references from current and past employers unless the applicant has not previously been employed, in which case a personal reference should be sought
  2. Consider who you should make your reference request to, paying particular attention to the type of job for which you are recruiting; you may need to contact a line manager if particular skills are required for the role, otherwise HR may be sufficient
  3. Consider whether you should write to or speak with the referee and what information should be requested; this usually includes job title, details of responsibilities, time keeping, performance and development but you may require some specific information
  4. Written reference requests are most common and a letter is sufficient, although you may wish to consider using a standard reference form
