Harassment counselling checklist

1.  Before beginning a counselling session make sure you will not be interrupted. Make it clear to the employee what time you have available to discuss their problem on this occasion. Additional sessions may be convened as necessary.  

2.  When an employee approaches you without notice, if you cannot give the matter your full attention, you should make arrangements for a scheduled session.  

3.  At the beginning of the session explain to the employee that confidentiality will be maintained as far as reasonably practicable but that information may need to be disclosed in the interests of health and safety, in the event of a formal hearing or to comply with the Data Protection Act.
