Dealing with capability through ill health checklist

Filed Under: Sickness & Absence - Checklists | Published on: Tuesday, 07 February 2012 11:41 AM
  • You should investigate any medical reasons for an employee`s absence before deciding that he is not capable of continuing in his job. Ensure that you apply a consistent approach to all employees.
  • You should consult with the employee but, unlike an absence counselling session, the focus must be on resolving the absence rather than discussing the causes.
  • Consider making reasonable adjustments to the employee`s job and, where this is not possible, consider whether there are any alternative jobs suitable to the employee.
  • Obtain up to date medical evidence from the employee`s G.P. and if appropriate an independent specialist and ensure that the medical expert is fully informed of the employee`s absence record, duties and details of any proposed alternative positions.
