Processing a request for additional paternity leave checklist

  1. Check that the employee’s written notice confirms their eligibility as the child’s father, co-adopter or the spouse/civil partner/partner of the child’s mother and that you have a declaration from the child’s mother or co-adopter, as applicable, certifying the relationship. 
  2. Has the employee confirmed the expected week of childbirth or, in the case of adoption, the date when they were notified of placement?  You will need this to check that the employee has sufficient service to qualify.
  3. Was the employee working for you, continuously, for at least 26 weeks by the end of the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth or, in the case of adoption, the end of the week in which they were notified of having been matched with the child, and have they remained continually employed since then?
  4. Has the required period of notice been served? The employee’s written notice must be submitted at least 8 weeks before additional paternity leave and pay can start.
