Terminating an employees contract checklist

When contemplating terminating an employee`s contract, you should consider the following steps:

1. Is the reason for termination a disciplinary matter? If so,
  • Follow the organisation`s disciplinary procedure, and ensure the employee has a copy.
  • Conduct a proper investigation, if possible, by someone who will not conduct the disciplinary hearing if there is a case to answer. This includes interviewing the employee and relevant witnesses.
