The Freedom of Information Act 2000

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the "Act") provides a framework of rights of access to information held by public bodies. The Information Commissioner is the authority responsible for promoting good practice and disseminating information relating to the Act.
 
This fact sheet is not intended to be a full summary of the law and advice should be sought on individual situations.
 
The effect on public bodies
 
The main effect of the Act will be to require public bodies to be more accountable, to the extent that individuals and private bodies will be able to request information held by the public body from 1 January 2005.
