Identify the hazards

  • Carry out a workplace inspection looking for obvious hazards such as dangerous cables and blocked fire escapes.  It may be possible to deal with some hazards immediately.  For instance, moving a computer screen so that it is not in the glare of the sun.
  • Consider the tasks and job descriptions of your employees and consult with them as to how they carry out their duties.
  • Consider the major risks which might affect your business. Do you have a lot of employees carrying out long distance driving or working at height?
  • Look at your accident records - these may show a pattern of accidents in a particular part of your business or in conjunction with the use of a certain machine.
  • Consider the specific requirements relating to your business, for instance the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSSH) or the Food Safety Regulations.
