Effect and importance

The Information and Consultation Directive is likely to have a highly significant long-term effect on employee relations in the UK, because we have no tradition of works council arrangements, which are typical of many EU states.  The Directive substantially enhances the limited statutory obligations on U.K. employers to inform and consult with employees, namely on business transfers, and in collective redundancy situations.  The potential impact on employment relations is enormous, as many employers are now beginning to consider how to apply the consultation obligations in a way that suits their existing structures and business diversity.
